Rinsai Utsushi

Rinsai Utsushi - Various Birds and Flowers in a Mountainous Landscape Kacho-ga - Depiction of Birds and Flowers

Various Birds and Flowers in a Mountainous Landscape (Kacho-ga - Depiction of Birds & Flowers)

Rinsai Utsushi's original woodcut, Various Birds and Flowers in a Mountainous Landscape is printed upon nineteenth century Japanese mulberry paper and hails from his largest and most famous set of 'Kacho-ga' (Depiction of Birds & Flowers), entitled, 'Newly Selected Nature Studies' published in Edo in 1880. This Japanese landscape with depictions of birds and flowers is beautifully rendered. What makes this particular scene even more unique is Utsushi's use of perspective. Here, you (the spectators), are invited to view the scene from behind the flowering branch placed before your eyes, enticing you to walk into this magical landscape where flora and fauna are in complete harmony with nature. This work of art is a fine example of the dramatic woodcut art from the Meiji era and the important Kacho-ga art by the Japanese artist, Rinsai Utsushi.

Title: Various Birds and Flowers in a Mountainous Landscape (Kacho-ga - Depiction of Birds & Flowers)
Artist: Utsushi, Rinsai (Japan, active, c. 1869 - 1890)
Date: 1880
Medium: Original Japanese Woodcut
Source: Newly Selected Nature Studies
Note: Rinsai Utsushi: 'Kacho-ga' -- the depiction of birds and flowers -- was one of the three traditional subjects of Chinese painting. Japanese woodblock masters thoroughly explored this field with the great Utamaro leading the way in the late eighteenth century. The nineteenth century, however, witnessed the finest and most diverse Kacho-ga (Kacho-e), with numerous contributions by both Hokusai and Hiroshige. Later, with the Meiji era (1868 - 1912) found one of its most perfect vehicles of interpretation in its dramatic bird and flower woodcuts. Such fine artists of the era, such as Zeshin, Imao Keinen, Watanabe Seitei and Rinsai Utsushi dedicated much of their oeuvre to the art of Kacho-ga.
Rinsai Utsushi is known to have produced woodcuts in the capital of Edo from 1869 to 1890. Practically all his art was dedicated to the study of the natural world. Most of his woodcuts were created in series form and bound into a 'gafu' (picture album), 'Ehon' (picture book), also known as, woodblock-printed book hence the centre crease in this original example. This woodcut hails from his largest and most famous set of Kacho-ga, published in Edo in 1880. The spectacular colouration and detailing of these large woodcuts have long made these original woodcuts to be among the most prized examples of late nineteenth century Japanese art. With its sandy beach, warm water, splendid flowers and birds, this Japanese woodcut is typical of Rinsai Utsushi's beautifully rendered landscapes. What makes this particular landscape even more unique is the artist's use of perspective. Here, you (the spectators), are observing the scene from behind the flowering branch placed before your eyes, enticing you to walk out and into this magical landscape where flora and fauna are in complete harmony with nature. Various Birds and Flowers in a Mountainous Landscape is a fine example of the dramatic bird and flower woodcut art from the Meiji era and the important Kacho-ga art of Rinsai Utsushi.
