Amerigo Tot

Amerigo Tot - Two Figures

Two Figures

Amerigo Tot's original lithograph, Two Figures, is known to exist in at least four trial states. In these proof impressions the lines remain the same but the color patterns change significantly from blue to pale greys and greens and then to blue and gold. Amerigo Tot has annotated this impression, "1 stato (state)", thus indicating that it is a very early, possibly unique, artist proof impression. It is not known if a signed and numbered edition was published. This impression is also signed and dated by the artist in pencil along the lower margin.

Famous for his sculptures, Amerigo Tot created both lithographs and etchings during the decade of the 1960's.

Note: Amerigo Tot: Born and raised in Hungary, Amerigo Tot's actual name was Imre Toth. In 1921 he settled with his family in Budapest and began his art studies there six years later at the Model-Drawing School. His teachers included Gyula Kaesz and Gyorgy Leszkovsky. Amerigo Tot graduated in 1930 and in the following year he was accepted as a student at Germany's famous Bauhaus, where he received lessons from such artists as Lyonel Feininger, Josef Albers and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. In 1932 the Bauhaus was banned by the Nazi regime. In 1933 Tot moved to Dresden where he enlisted in the art school of Otto Dix. His first exhibition was held there that year at the Brucke Gallery. Not long afterwards the Nazis arrested all the students of the school, deporting them to Zwickau. Tot, however, managed to escape and made his way (mainly on foot) to Italy, via Czechoslovakia and Austria.
Amerigo Tot arrived in Rome in June of 1933. Completely penniless, he supported himself by drawing portraits and painting walls. With the help of a scholarship from the Collegium Hungaricum Amerigo Tot created his first sculptures and then moved into a studio on the Via Vittoria in 1936. Awards and important commissions for his work began in 1937. During the following years he received commissions from such institutions as the government of Albania, the Termini Railway Station of Rome, the Olympic Games in Rome and the Vatican. Individual exhibitions of Tot's art took place in New York, Budapest, Rome, Venice, Switzerland, Denmark and Sweden. In 1979 Amerigo Tot received the Laurel Wreath Order from the People's Republic of Hungary. The Amerigo Tot Museum in Budapest was opened shortly after his death.
Amerigo Tot's life was anything but mundane. During the Second World War he served in the Italian Resistance as both a liaison officer and as a paratrooper. After the war he participated in both motor racing and movie acting. In this latter category his most memorable role is probably that of the bodyguard of Michael Corleone (portrayed by Al Pacino), in The Godfather, Part II.
