Note: Samuel Thal 'Sam Thal': A fine American painter, etcher, engraver and sculptor, Samuel Thal was a student of the Art Students League, New York, the National Academy of Design and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School. During the era of the Great Depression, Sam Thal worked as both a W.P.A. artist and constructed teaching programs for the Federal Art Project. After the Depression, Samuel Thal continued to paint and etch and exhibited his art in major institutions throughout the United States. In the early 1940's he was even employed by the Harvard University Psychological Clinic to create drawings that are still used for the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT).
Sam Thal's art was the subject of either awards or prizes from such institutions as the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts (1943), the Library of Congress (1945) and the National Academy of Design. His art was also the subject of a one man exhibition at the United States National Museum in 1947. Today institutions that list Thal's original art in their permanent collections include the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Public Library, Pennsylvania State University, Library of Congress, Washington, DC, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
Samuel Thal moved permanently from New York to Boston in 1923. During the following decades he was a major artist of that city and was a full member of the Boston Architectural Club. Samuel Thal not only painted and etched scenes depicting the environs of Boston but was also worked as a sculptor for both the Harvard Medical School and the East Boston Airport.
In the 1940's Samuel Thal was commissioned at least five times to contribute original etchings and drypoint engravings to the Associated American Artists in New York. The A.A.A. was created in the mid 1930's and was responsible for commissioning original graphic art from such leading American masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh, Samuel Thal and Irwin Hoffman. Time Out was published by the A.A.A. in 1947 in a limited, signed edition of 250 impressions.
