Dorothy Sweet: A talented English engraver and etcher of landscapes and
architectural views, Dorothy Sweet first began to exhibit her art in the
early 1920's with the Abbey Gallery, London, and with the Society
of Women Artists. The majority of her art depicted scenes in and around
the London area. She was equally skilled at dry point engraving, etching
and colour printmaking. |
| |
"Norman Gateway, Bury St. Edmunds" is an outstanding example
of Sweet's artistic work. Aquatinting is extensively used to create
rich tonal areas throughout the composition, while blues, greens and rust
colours aid in building sharp contrasts of light and shade. |
| |
Most of Dorothy Sweet’s original colour prints date from the
last years of the 1920’s decade. As the printing methods were both
complex and expensive for these prints, very small editions were published.
It is believed that with the beginning of the Great Depression in 1930,
Dorothy Sweet, like so many other talented artists, was forced to abondon
her career. |
