Michael Stokoe's art may generally be divided into two distinct phases. In the first half of his career the artist's work was fully abstract and concentrated upon the relationships between non representational forms and colours. Movements on a Green Field is a fine example of this period. Beginning around 1980, however, he explored figure studies and landscapes in a much more realist manner. Form and colour, however, continues to be his primary aesthetic concern.
Provenance: Movements on a Green Field originates from the collection of Roger Trlak and bearing his inventory number, 'T-883', on the verso. Roger Trlak (1934-1975) established the commercial art company of Martin-Trlak in Chicago. These Included such major American and international printmakers as Joseph Hirsch, Luigi Lucioni, Jacob Landau, Birgit Skiold, Michael Stokoe and Paul Wunderlich. Among Trlak's closest friends in the arts community were Raphael Soyer, Ivan Albright and Hans Burkhardt.
