Note: Robert Stanley: A well known American printmaker of the 1960's and 1970's, Robert Stanley studied at Columbia University, New York (1951- 1953), and at the Brooklyn Museum Art School (1954-1956). His first one man show took place at the Bianchini Gallery, New York, in 1965. Since that date his art was the subject of major shows in the United States, Canada, Germany, Holland and Switzerland. Stanley served as a visiting artist and instructor at such institutions as Louisiana State University (1976), Syracuse University (1978) and Princeton University (1979-1980). His art is now found in many major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
In his original silkscreens and lithographs, Stanley often explored an ordinary scene through extra-ordinary perspectives. Starting with a photmechanical base the artist would fracture an image into a maze of spots, dots and circles. With study, our eyes begin to comprehend the logic of this maze and distinguish a large sandal surrounded by fallen leaves. The Pop art of Robert Stanley is all about ways of seeing.
