Marko Spalatin

Marko Spalatin - Strato-cubes

Strato-cubes

Marko Spalatin's original serigraph (silkscreen), "Strato-cubes", was published in a limited edition of fifty signed impressions. Here, as in many of Marko Spalatin's original prints, light and color are employed to create the illusions of volume and space, thus presenting a unique landscape. This impression is printed on white, smooth, wove paper with full margins as published between 1970 & 1980. It is signed, titled and numbered, '4/50' by the artist in pencil on the lower margin. "Strato-cubes" is a fine, original example of the graphic art created by the American artist, Marko Spalatin, one of the major masters of American Op Art.

He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1968 and his Master of Fine Arts in 1971, both from the University of Wisconsin. By 1970, Marko Spalatin had become a major Op Art printmaker, along with such artists as Richard Anuszkiewicz and Vasarely.
Briefly, Op Art is a type of abstract art that aims to exploit optical elements. Concerned with both the physical and psychological processes of vision, Op Art explored both illusion and reality through blocks or patterns of color. Strato-cubes is clearly a classic work of Op Art. Marko Spalatin's primary concern with geometric forms in space and their relation to both color and light is clearly delineated in "Strato-cubes".
Since 1970, the art of Marko Spalatin has been included in major exhibitions in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, Paris, Montreal and Beirut. Today examples of his fine prints will be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art, Musee d'Art Moderne, Paris, the Tate Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Library of Congress, Washington, DC.
