Note: Benedict Soltys 'Ben Soltys': Born in Cleveland, Benedict Soltys received his artistic training there. During the Second World War he served as a sergeant in the United States Army (map making division) and saw action in both North Africa and Italy. In both the North African and Italian campaigns he was under the command of General Dwight David Eisenhower.
  After the war, Benedict Soltys gained employment as a lithographer for Diamond International in Erie, Pennsylvania. During this period he exhibited his art in Cleveland, New York and elsewhere.
Provenance: This original watercolor of Salerno Beach, Italy was Formerly in the collection of the Associated American Artists, New York. Since its creation in the mid 1930's the Associated American Artists commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and others. It published etchings and lithographs of no less stature during the years following the Second World War as contributing artists included Robert Bero, David Shapiro, Jack Levine, Chaim Koppelman, Joseph Margulies, James Kearns, Gregory Masurovsky, Jack Coughlin and Sidney Chafetz. Besides publishing art, the A.A.A. also ran a large gallery on Fifth Avenue where important paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints were sold.
  Ben Soltys's Salerno Beach bears the A.A.A. gallery tag on the verso. It contains the following information; From the Galleries of Associated American Artists, 711 Fifth Avenue, New York 22, N. Y. Artist - Ben Soltys. Title - Salerno Beach. Medium - wc (watercolor). Price - $40. The verso also contains another watercolor (a view of a town). The artist has scribbled a pencil line through this image and written, 'Old Work'.

Condition: Painted on archival, pure rag paper and with full margins. Signed and dated by the artist to the lower right and containing the aforementioned information on the verso. In fine condition throughout without a trace of light toning or discoloration. Altogether Salerno Beach represents a prime example of the landscape art of Benedict Soltys 'Ben Soltys'.
