Head Study

Bernard Solomon's original woodcut "Head Study" was created around 1975. The American artist, Bernard Alan Solomon has achieved a high reputation for his wood engravings and woodcuts, published both individually and as suites of images for limited edition illustrated books. Much of his fine art deals with religious themes, particularly pertaining to Judaica. Such may be the case with this large and powerful portrait study, which was published in a very small edition of twenty original, signed impressions.

Note: Bernard Alan Solomon 'Bernard Solomon': A contemporary American wood engraver, Bernard Solomon studied printmaking techniques under Misch Kohn, at the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology. While still a student (1968), he won an award for his art from the Northwest Printmakers. By 1974 Bernard Solomon had accepted a position in the Art Department at Georgia Southern College, Statesboro, where he founded the Southern Graphics Council and also, taught there for many years.
  Bernard Solomon's art has been the subject of numerous one-man exhibitions throughout the United States. Besides his individual relief prints (such as "Head Study"), Solomon is also famous for his finely crafted books which feature his block prints and wood engravings. These include, "The Zaddick Christ: A Suite of Wood Engravings" and Song of "Songs" (1983).
  Solomon has achieved a high reputation for his wood engravings and woodcuts, published both individually and as suites of images for limited edition illustrated books. Much of his fine art deals with religious themes, particularly pertaining to Judaica.
  Today the art of Bernard Solomon is included in the permanent collections of such institutions as The Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art, Tulsa, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D. C.
