Lawrence Beall Smith's original lithograph, "Frolic" was created by 20th century American artist in 1948. With the delightful rhythms of the running children and of the falling leaves it showcases Smith's gifts of creating a tapestry of light and shade and movement, is rightly considered one of his greatest works of art in this genre.

This impression of "Frolic" is printed upon upon deckled wove paper and with full margins as published in New York by the "Associated American Artists" in a limited edition of two hundred and fifty signed impressions. It is signed and dated within the stone to the lower left and signed by Lawrence Beall Smith in pencil along the lower margin.

Note: Lawrence Beall Smith: A premier American painter, sculptor, lithographer and illustrator of the twentieth century, Lawrence Beall Smith studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the University of Chicago (PH.D.., 1931) as well as under Harold Zimmerman and Charles Hopkinson, in Boston. Smith began exhibiting his art in 1935 and gained a strong national reputation by 1941 when a one-man exhibition of his art was launched at the Whitney Museum in New York. During World War II he created posters for the war effort and was an artist for the D-Day landings in Normandy. Commissioned by the Abbott Laboratories in 1944, Lawrence Beall-Smith also served as a war correspondent covering the activities of the Medical Corps in Europe. Throughout the following years, Smith's art figured prominently in most major exhibitions, including those of the prestigious National Academy.
  Besides his paintings and sculptures in stone, Lawrence Beall Smith was also a highly gifted lithographic artist and illustrator. In this latter category, he illustrated such fine books as Robin Hood (1952), The History of Tom Jones; A Foundling (1964), Washington Square (1971), The Adventures of Oliver Twist (1956), Toby and the Nightime (1963) and other well-known books. Today examples of his original lithographs, paintings and sculpture are included in the permanent collections of such major galleries as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, the University of Chicago, and the Library of Congress, Washington, DC.
  Children are a major theme in Smith's lithographic art. From 1940 to around 1970 he was commissioned a number of times by the Associated American Artists of New York for his delightful lithographs upon this subject. Frolic (created in 1948) is rightly considered one of his greatest works of art in this genre. With the delightful rhythms of the running children and of the falling leaves it showcases Smith's gifts of creating a tapestry of light and shade and movement.
  Frolic was published by the Associated American Artists of New York in a sole limited edition of 250 impressions. Since its creation in the mid 1930's the Associated American Artists commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and others. It published etchings and lithographs of no less stature during the 1960's and 1970's as contributing artists from around the world included Lily Harmon, Jacob Landau, W. B. Eberhard Eggers, Peter Klitsch, Robert Bero, David Shapiro, Jack Levine, Chaim Koppelman, Joseph Margulies, James Kearns, Gregory Masurovsky, Jack Coughlin and Sidney Chafetz. Lawrence Beall Smith was one of the A.A.A. s most prodigious artists and contributed his sought after lithographs for almost three decades.

Signed and dated within the stone to the lower left and signed by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. A finely printed impression with brilliant contrasts and in excellent condition throughout. Frolic represents a prime, original example of the famous lithographic art of Lawrence Beall Smith.
