Note: William Alexander: A versatile and important late eighteenth and early nineteenth century artist, William Alexander studied under W. Pars and J. C. Ibbetson before entering the Royal Acedemy Schools. Alexander's first great engravings date from 1792 to 1794, when he accompanied the Earl of Macartney's expedition to China. His brilliant views of the dress and manners of the Chinese gave Alexander a strong reputation as a travelling draughtsman and in the following years he published and engraved such sets as, The Costumes of the Russian Empire (1803), Picturesque Representations of the Austrians (1813), and Picturesque Representations of the Turks (1814).
Apart from his topographical art, however, William Alexander’s talents as a fine and accurate artist of architectural antiquities were making their mark. While assuming the post of Professor of Drawing at the Military College, Great Marlow, Alexander created an important series of engravings under the title of, Engravings from the Egyptian Antiquities in the British Museum (1805). This led to his appointment as the Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum in 1808, a position Alexander held until his death in 1816. During this period of eight years, Alexander dedicated most of his energies to highly exceptional drawings of ancient Greek and Roman antiquities. These drawings were then engraved, under Alexander's guidance, And published in parts.
The engraving of William Alexander's designs for ancient Greek and Roman antiquities was entrusted to such noteworthy artists as Charles Armstrong, J. C. Bromley, Burnett, William Skelton and Luigi Schiavonetti. These early nineteenth century engravings stand as a highpoint of architectural art. Apart from their delicate artistry, Alexander utilized large spaced to make the designs stand out in their clarity. In total, the British Museum published about 100 engravings in this format during the eight year span. They represent some of the finest engravings of architectural antiquities one can find.
