Joseph Simpson: A famous British painter, etcher and illustrator, Joseph Simpson studied at the Glasgow School of Art and exhibited throughout his career with the Royal Scottish Academy and with the Royal Society of Watercolour Painters. In 1918 he was commissioned as the official war artist for the R.A.F. and was stationed in France. After the war, Simpson's art was exhibited abroad in Munich, Venice, Florence and Stockholm.
As an original etcher, Joseph Simpson was a master of portraits, figure studies and sporting subjects. His bold and vigorous method of etching, combined with strong diagonal shadings made his art distinct amongst British etchers. English critics, in fact, compared his etchings to those of the great Swedish master, Anders Zorn!
Joseph Simpson created slightly over fifty original etchings during his life and of these critics are generally in accord that his greatest achievement was in the field of portraiture. As one can see in these original impression of Portrait of an Old Lady, Simpson's ability to capture both expression and character was second to none. The British Museum in London has almost twenty of Simpson's etchings in it permanent collection.
