Kay Simmelhag

Kay Simmelhag - Danish Countryside an Original Linocut

Danish Countryside

Kay Simmelhag's original linocut, "Danish Countryside" is typical of his early landscape art, with a focus on the countryside of his native Denmark. The ploughed fields, a dilapidated wall, vegetation and the flowing stream are all finely depicted. "Danish Countryside" is printed upon fine rice paper and with full margins as created in 1928. It is signed "Kay Simmelhag" and dated '28' in pencil by the artist to the lower right and is a fine, original example of the graphic art created by the Danish painter and printmaker, Kay Ferdinand Villian Simmelhag.

Note: Kay Ferdinand Villian Simmelhag 'Kay Simmelhag': A leading Danish painter, printmaker, illustrator, and a fine mosaic artist, Kay Simmelhag studied at the Copenhagen University. The artist spent several years in southern France during the early 1920's and around 1922, he began exhibiting his art internationally. During the following years his paintings, woodcuts, lithographs and linocuts were included in major exhibitions in Prague, Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen, Haveselsk and elsewhere. The Skovgaard Museet in Denmark includes several works by Kay Simmelhag in its collection.
Kay Simmelhag's woodcuts and linocuts focus almost exclusively upon the countryside of Denmark. Views of forests, streams and ruins figure prominently. In these intimate works, attention to the effects of light and shade, form and texture are masterfully delineated. In this original linocut, for example, Kay Simmelhag found almost all his inspiration in the landscape of his native Denmark. The Danish countryside, the ploughed fields, a dilapidated wall, the vegetation and a flowing stream are all finely depicted. During the 1920's and 1930's, Kay Simmelhag dedicated most of his creative efforts to original printmaking. "Danish Countryside" is a striking example from this period, created in the medium of the linocut. The artist was married to the painter, Ida Bay-Schmith.
Kay Simmelhag was also the illustrator of such fine books as, Far paa Jagt (Father On Hunting) by Kay Simmelhag (1945), Vore store Fugle (Our Large Birds) by Kay Simmelhag (1945), Drenge Jorden rundt (Boys Around the World) by Kay Simmelhag (c. 1946), Der er en Verden udenfor Verona (There is a World outside Verona) by Svend Methling (1946), Fra Fjeld Og Fos (From the Mountain and the Waterfal) by Svend Methling (1950), I Havstokken (On the Beach) by Svend Methling (1952), and others. Note: The translations for the book titles may not be exact.a
As a mosaic artist Simmelhag has adorned, coffee tables, wall plaques and other objects of various shapes and sizes with his stone & mixed media mosaics, beautifully adorned with a variety of motifs such as birds, insects, animals, fruits and flowers. In 1937, his combined interest in aquariums and mosaics landed him employment at the Denmark Aquarium, where the artist, Kay Simmelhag, in cooperation with the director of the Aquarium, Mr. Mogens Hojgaard created the decorations for them.
