Title: Halloween Parade
Artist: Sears, Sarah (Anniston, Alabama, 1953 - Resides, New York City)
Date: 1987
Medium: Original Etching & Aquatint
Note:

"In my own work, I love to convey a sense of mystery. The scenes of New York express my fascination with the City's nightly transformation into a magical fortress of dark buildings and glowing streets. ... In some pieces, a meaning, or a story, may not be readily apparent, but that does not bother me -- such is the ambiguity of existence." *

Sarah Sears: A contemporary New York City printmaker and painter, Sarah Sears received her B.A. from Harding University, Searcy, Arkansas (1976) and her M.A. in Printmaking from Arkansas State University (1982). Shortly thereafter she moved to New York and began exhibiting her fine art. Her first solo exhibitions took place in 1982 with shows at both Harding University and at the Art Connection Gallery of St. Louis. Since that time one person exhibitions of her etchings, relief prints and paintings have taken place at the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, New York (1983), Cartier Inc., New York (1986), Associated American Artists (1988), the National Arts Club, New York (1995) and the Creative Artists Network, Philadelphia (1995). Sarah Sears has also participated in major group exhibitions with the New York Society of Etchers, the Society of American Graphic Artists, the Boston Printmakers and at institutions such as the National Academy of Design.
Created in 1987, "Halloween Parade" was included in the 1988 exhibition of the fine prints of Sarah Sears at the Associated American Artists, New York. Vincent Price purchased an impression of this original etching at this time. With its fine tonal values and strong, almost haunting, elements of light and shade, Halloween Parade represents one of Sears’ greatest New York City scenes. Of her art she states, "In many ways I am an old fashioned artist. I have the deepest reverence for a well-done drawing. ... Within the rectangular format and the traditional elements of design, I have found enough possibilities for many years of individual expression." **
In 2004 Sarah Sears received the Rembrandt Graphics Award at the 71st National Society of American Graphic Artists Exhibition. Today her fine prints and paintings are included in such collections as Trenton State University Print Collection, the Smithsonian Institution and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Edition: Limited edition of fifty impressions, numbered 30/50.
