John Scott & George-Louis-Leclerc, Comte de Buffon

John Scott and George Louis Leclerc Comte de Buffon - The Horse From Buffon

The Horse From Buffon

John Scott's original etching and engraving, "The Horse From Buffon" is based upon a design created by George-Louis-Leclerc, 'Comte de Buffon'. It is printed upon late eighteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published J. Wheble, Warwick in London in 1797. This engraving delineats Buffon's anatomy of the horse according to the corresponding title, refers to the esteemed French naturalist, George-Louis-Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. This is a fine, original example of the animal art created by the British artist, John Scott.

Title: The Horse From Buffon
Artist: Scott, John (Newcastle, 1774 - Chelsea, 1828)
Date: 1797

Publisher: J. Wheble, Warwick Court, London
Note: John Scott: One of England's most famous engravers of animals, John Scott was apprenticed to a tallow-chandler in Newcastle. He moved to London around 1792 and was taught drawing and engraving by the coaching artist, Robert Pollard. Scott first gained employment as a portrait engraver and then for a series of etchings depicting English cathedrals. After 1795, however, he was regularly commissioned by important periodicals such as 'Daniel's Rural Sports' and 'Sportsman's Cabinet'. (This original engraving may have served as a frontispiece to one of these publishers.)
The title of this engraving refers to the esteemed French naturalist, George-Louis-Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, who produced his first volume of animal study in 1749. Appearing under the general title of Histoire Naturelle , Buffon continued to produce many more volumes until his death in 1788. Initially, this engraving was probably accompanied by text delineating Buffon's anatomy of the horse according to the corresponding letters.
