William Wynne Ryland (W. W. Ryland)

William Wynne Ryland - Sir John Ligonier

Sir John Ligonier

William Wynne Ryland's original engraving, Sir John Ligonier (Field Marshal John Ligonier, 1st Earl Ligonier), probably dates from sometime in the 1760's. Sir John Ligonier, an English military officer was born in 1680 and died in 1770. It is not known whether W. W. Ryland engraved this portrait from life or engraved it from the design of another artist.

William Wynne Ryland was one of England's finest late eighteenth century engravers. The event of his demise, however, will always overshadow the achievements of his life. On August 29, 1783 he became the last convicted criminal to be hanged at Tyburn.

Title: Sir John Ligonier (Field Marshal John Ligonier, 1st Earl Ligonier)
Artist Ryland, William Wynne (London, 1732 - 1783)
Date: c. 1760 - 1770
Medium: Original Engraving
Note: William Wynne Ryland: William Wynne Ryland first studied engraving techniques in London, under Simon Francois Ravenet. He then went to Paris, studying design and drawing under Francois Boucher and Roubillac, and engraving under Jacques-Philippe Le Bas. Ryland remained in Paris for a period of five years and engraved his first plates there.
Upon his return to England, W. W. Ryland soon received important commissions, including two full length engravings of the King. Such work gained him the enviable title of Engraver to King George III, along with an annual salary of two hundred Pounds. Ryland also became a full member of the Incorporated Society of Artists (1766) and frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy.
Shortly after 1770, William Wynne Ryland abandoned line engraving in favour of the dotted manner known as stipple engraving. He achieved an even higher level of success in this medium particularly in his work after the drawings of Italian old masters and after the contemporary designs of Angelica Kauffmann.
During this decade, however, Ryland's business attempts ended in bankruptcy. As well, G. C. Williamson writes, "Towards the end of his life he entered into a liaison with a young woman, who involved him in great expenses, to provide for which he stepped from the path of honesty. In 1783 he was tried on a charge of forgery, condemned, and, in spite of the efforts of his friends, hanged." *
Sir John Ligonier (Castres, France, 1680- Cobham, Surrey, 1770): Born in France, British officer and courtier, Field Marshal Jean Louis Ligonier, 1st Earl Ligonier is known to have fought some of his first battles with a Regiment in Flanders. Throughout his military career, he distinguished himself as a major force in such wars and battles as the War of the Spanish Succession, the War of the Austrian Succession, the siege of Liege and the Seven Years' War. There is a monument created by the sculptor, John Francis Moore in memory of Field Marshal John (Jean-Louis), Earl Ligonier in the north ambulatory of Westminster Abbey. The monument depicts Sir John Ligonier holding a scroll which contains an engraved list of the sieges and general actions, ten of which where major battles. Some of these include the battle of Schellenberg, Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde, Taniere, Malplaquet, Fontenoy, Rococous and Laffeldt.
During his career, Ligonier received many important and high ranking military appointments and honours for his merits. Among the many awards, he was made Knight of the Bath on the field of Dettingen by George II, Lieutenant-General of the Ordenance, Colonel of the 2nd Dragoon Guards, Colonel of the 1st Foot Guards, and Commander-in Chief of the Forces where he worked closely as military advisor with the Pitt-Newcastle Ministry in connection with the Seven Years' War. (Note: In the mid 18th century, Great Britain and France disputed over the ownership of the vast inner basin of North America. This struggle became known in America as the 'French and Indian War'. The conflict eventually developed into a global struggle for empire, later called the Seven Years' War, 1756-1763.) Sir John Ligonier also had a fine political career. He became a Member of the Parliament for Bath, was appointed Governor of Minorca, Governor of Guernsey and of Plymouth, Viscount Ligonier of Clonmell, Baron and Earl in the British peerage.
Note: The Granger Collection, New York City, includes an impression of Sir John Ligonier in its permanent collection.
