Sarabande

Therese Ruffie de Longueval original aquatint engraving, Sarabande probably dates from the 1960's or 1970's. She created her first etching in Paris in 1960 and produced most of her graphic art during the next two decades.

Sarabande is printed upon a large sheet of smooth, archival paper and with full margins as published in an edition of one hundred and twenty-five impressions. It is signed. dated and numbered by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. This is a fine, original example of the engraved art created by the twentieth century French painter and engraver, Therese Ruffie.

Note: Therese Ruffie de Longueval: A twentieth century French painter and etcher, Therese Ruffie de Longueval studied art techniques in Toulouse and Paris. In both 1942 and 1944 she won first prizes for sculpture and design at Toulouse's Ecole des Beaux Arts. After the end of World War Two she moved to Paris and exhibited her art there at both the Salon du trait and the Salon des independants.
  Therese Ruffie has exhibited works in oils, pastels, etching and aquatint. She produced her first etching in 1960 and, since 1975, has concentrated mainly upon figure studies and nudes.
  Sarabande: During the Baroque era, a Sarabande was usually included in Suites by Bach and many of his contemporaries. The Suite often included a Sarabande as the third of four movements. The French word, Sarabande translates to Zarabanda in Spanish. Also, the Webster Universal Dictionary states that it is a slow Spanish graceful dance and is probably of Moorish origin. In music, the sarabande is a dance in triple time with an accented second beat in the bar.

Condition: Printed on thick archival paper and with full margins as published around the above dates. Pencil signed, "Th Ruffie" titled and numbered, '80/125', along the lower margin. Containing faint overall light toning, else in good condition throughout. Sarabande represents a fine, original example of the 20th century French art of Therese Ruffie de Longueval.
