Title: Water Carrier
Artist: Rudnay, Gyula (Pelsuc, Hungary, 1878 - 1957)
Date: c. 1930
Medium: Original Etching
Note: Gyula Rudnay: A leading Hungarian painter and printmaker of the twentieth century, Gyula Rudnay studied art in Munich, under Simon Hollosy. Further studies took him to Rome and then to Paris in 1903. Shortly after his return to Hungary, Rudnay became influenced by the realist literature of Russian authors. He began basing his art upon these realist elements and depicted both the Hungarian landscape and its people with great artistry and integrity.
In 1905 Rudnay moved to Hodmezovasarhely and during the First World War he both lived and worked in Losonc. During this period his art became even more realist in nature and he painted a series of images dealing with the refugees of war. In 1922 Rudnay was appointed a professor of the National Art School. Four years later he was commissioned to produce both paintings and tapestries for the Hungarian Parliament. In 1947 he moved to Baja where he founded an important school for art.
Today the art of Gyula Rudnay will be found in most major public Hungarian collections as well as in museums in Brussels, Geneva, Rome and Venice.
Gyula Rudnay created his first original etchings in 1922. During the following years many of his etchings dealt with imagery concerning the poor and downtrodden and in this regard they have often been compared to the art of Goya and Munkacsy. With its brilliant contrasts of light and dark, Water Carrier is a superb example of Rudnay's realist art.
