Lewis Rubenstein 'Lewis W. Rubenstein': A very accomplished twentieth century
American painter and printmaker, Lewis Rubenstein first studied at Harvard
University until 1930. He was then awarded the Bacon traveling fellowship
(1931-1933) and painted with Leger and Ozenfant in Paris. Upon returning
to the United States, Rubenstein painted frescos with Rico Lebrun and
continued his education with an apprenticeship in lithography under Emil
Ganso. He then completed his studies by traveling to Tokyo to explore
the possibilities of Sumi painting with Keigetsu. Rubenstein received
the Fulbright Grant and actually lived and worked in Japan in 1957 and
1958. Sea Gleaners was created by the artist at this time. |
|
During his career, Lewis Rubenstein's paintings and lithographs
were exhibited in such institutions as the Fogg Art Museum, Boston, the
Whitney Museum, New York, the Corcoran Museum, Philadelphia, the National
Academy of Design and the Library of Congress, Washington, as well as
with the Society of American Graphic Artists (1952-1981) and the American
Watercolor Society (1955-1964). He was a member of the Buffalo Print Club (1931-1962), formed by many of Buffalo's finest printmakers.. As well, Lewis W. Rubenstein held the post of professor
of painting at Vassar College from 1939 to 1974. |
|
Sea Gleaners is a fine example of Lewis Rubenstein's creative
art. Incorporating elements of Japanese sumi or ink painting into his
personal vocabulary, Rubenstein produced a haunting image of figures at
work within a landscape. Few modern artists are capable of fashioning
a scene of such consummate artistry and atmosphere. |
