Lica Roman

Lica Roman - La Famille The Family

La Famille (The Family)

Lica Roman's original edition of aquatints, La Famille, was published in New York by the Associated American Artists in a limited edition of one hundred impressions. What is remarkable is that the artist has altered each impression by employing different colors, tones and hues, and thus has created one hundred individual works of art. One is reminded of an old, slightly out of focus family photograph (perhaps even a daguerreotype) that seems somewhat different each time one studies it. Two impressions -- #10 and #99 -- are illustrated below. Comparing the two impressions one sees constant flux and change, as if this old family portrait has somehow caught fleeting spirit forms. La Famille is a truly impressive work of art.

In the French capital Lica Roman was a member of and exhibited her art with the 'Femme-Peintre' group. She also worked as a printmaker at Paris's Atelier 17.
