Johann Elias Ridinger

Johann Elias Ridinger - Spuhr eines Steinbocks or Hoofprints of a Mountain Goat

Spuhr eines Steinbocks (Hoofprints of a Mountain Goat)

Johann Elias Ridinger's original etching and engraving, Spuhr eines Steinbocks (Hoofprints of a Mountain Goat) is printed on early 18th century wove paper. It is signed along the lower border within the plate, “Joh. El. Ridinger, inv. del. sc. et execud. Aug. Vindel.” -- ‘ Johann Elias Ridinger, invented, designed, engraved and published, Augsburg’. Spuhr eines Steinbocks is a fine, original example of the engraved animal art of J. E. Ridinger.

Title: Spuhr eines Steinbocks (Hoofprints of a Mountain Goat)
Artist: Ridinger, Johann Elias (Ulm, 1698 - Augsburg, 1766)
Date: 1751
Medium: Original Etching & Engraving
Publisher: Vindel, Augsburg
Note: Johann Elias Ridinger: One of the most famous animal artists of the eighteenth century, Johann Elias Ridinger (also spelt, 'Riedinger') received artistic instruction from Chirstopher Resch, in Ulm (1712), and from Falk and Rugendas, in Augsburg (1716). After 1723 Johann Ridinger founded his own publishing house and sold many of his own etchings and engravings. Apart from a three year residence in Regensburg, J. E. Ridinger remained in Augsburg and became the Director of that city's Art Academy in 1759.
Johann Elias Ridinger's paintings are few but he left a large opus of etchings that showcase his gifts for depicting animal life. He was an avid naturalist and it is clear that this occupation gave him the opportunity to study animals in detail in their natural habitats. A good many of Johann Elias Ridinger's etchings were made to increase scientific and zoological knowledge. Thus the lower portion of Spuhr eines Steinbocks accurately portrays the prints made by the hooves of a mountain goat. The upper two thirds of the etching depicts the animal within its native surroundings. Here, scientific observation is blended with Johann Ridinger's acute artistry. It's little wonder that J. E. Ridinger's etchings have been avidly sought after by collectors for over two centuries.
This original etching by Johann Elias Ridinger entitled, Spuhr eines Steinbocks hails from a portfolio of large, original etchings entitled, Spuhren und Fahrten der Tiere, published in Augsburg in 1751. The entire set contained twenty-two etchings of wild animals.
