Note: During the latter seventeenth and early nineteenth century a dominant force in French painting and engraving found expression in the cult of pleasure and the pursuit of gallantry. Known as the French Rococo style, artists depicted lush scenes of aristocratic life and sensual love. Whether the scene was of contemporary life or drawn from ancient mythology, these sentiments most often prevailed. Such famous engravers as Charles Eisen, Cochin and Jean Michel Moreau were principally commissioned by publishers of illustrated books to create sensual imagery. As none of the plates for Lettres a Emile were signed it is not known who the artist was, but their brilliant Rococo style places them in the same category with any of the above named engravers.
Lettres a Emile, sur la Mythologie was written by C. A. Demoustier and published in four parts by A. Renouard during the year of 1804. Each part contained six original engravings illustrative of the text. Most of these fine engravings deal with aspects of feminine love and as such mythological figures like Venus, Psyche and Minerva are depicted.
