Anonymous Renaissance Master

Anonymous Renaissance Master - Seeungeheuer Sea Monster The Cosmographia Universal Cosmography

Seeungeheuer: Sea Monster (The Cosmographia: Universal Cosmography)

Anonymous Renaissance Master: An original woodcut, Seeungeheuer (Sea Monster) originates from Sebastion Munster's epic Cosmographia (Universal Cosmography). Exploring such disciplines as natural science, astronomy, geography, history and folklore, the Cosmographia was second only to the Bible as the most read book in 16th century Germany. As such, many editions were published up to the early 17th century. As this impression of Seeungeheuer (Sea Monster) shows no sign of wear or fading it is probable to assume that it hails from an early edition.

Clearly, Seeungeheuer (Sea Monster) is one of the most popular images from the Cosmography. Judging from the lack of attire on the unfortunate victims it is possible that Munster based the encounter with this creature on an account from a tropical tribe. It is also possible that it illustrates an episode in a Greek or Latin classic.

In 1540 he published an edition of Ptolemy's Geographia. Four years later his first edition of Universal Cosmography (Cosmographia) was published. This work was the result of twenty years of extensive research by the author. After Munster's death subsequent editions were published with revised and expanded information upon the then known world, ending with the final edition of 1628.
Seeungeheuer (Sea Monster) was created for the first edition of the Cosmographia. It is not known how many editions this woodcut was utilized for, however, judging from the strong lines and tonal values of this impression, it probably originates from an early edition. The text on its verso is in German. Later editions were published in Latin, French, Italian, English and Czech.
