Note:	Richard Redgrave: An important nineteenth century British painter and etcher, Richard Redgrave studied at the Royal Academy Schools, under John Powell. He exhibited his art annually at the Royal Academy from 1825 to 1883, and at the British Institution and the Society of British Artists. Richard Redgrave was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1840 and an Academician in 1851.
	Although many of Richard Redgrave's paintings and etchings dealt with sentimental subject matter, he was one of the first Victorian era artists to seriously examine the lives of the poor and oppressed. One such painting, entitled The Seamstress (1846), was inspired by Thomas Hood's influential poem of the downtrodden, 'The Song of the Shirt'. As well, in many of his portrayals of women and fictional and spiritual themes, Richard Redgrave is seen as a precursor of the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
	Richard Redgrave was the author of An Elementary Manual of Colour (1853) and A Century of Painters of the English School (1862). He was a co-founder of the South Kensington Museum and selected the British paintings for the 1855 Exposition Universelle. Paris. Richard Redgrave also held the prestigious post of Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures from 1857 to 1880.
	Ministering Angels was commissioned and published by The Etching Club in 1857. Instituted in 1838 (Redgrave was a founding member) The Etching Club was an important, early institution devoted to the promotion of original, non-reproductive etching. Its members included such great painter-etchers as Samuel Palmer, Seymour Haden, Millais, Holman Hunt, Richard Ansdell and Richard Redgrave. Examples of Redgrave's original etchings are now included in the collections of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Condition:	Printed upon fine china paper and pressed onto a large, full sheet of wove paper as published in London in 1857. Signed in the plate, "R. Redgrave R.A." to the lower left. Containing slight foxing in the outer margins (well removed from the actual etching) else a beautifully printed impression and in very good condition throughout. Ministering Angels represents a prime, original example of the art of Richard Redgrave.
