A Boy and his Dog

Edward Purcell's original lithograph, "A Boy and his Dog" was created by the British artist in 1822. This original impression is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and is signed by the artist in the stone along the lower right margin as published for "Sketches in Lithography" by Thomas McLean at the date stated. The scene portrays a seated boy and his pet in the foreground. In the background we see cattle and a woman carrying water.

Note:	Edward Purcell was an early British lithographic artist. It is believed he was born and trained in Dublin. By 1820 he was working in London and produced such lithographic sets as "Lithographic Costumes of Russia and Persia" (1821) and "Sporting Sketches" (1824), after Henry Alken. This original lithograph entitled,"A Boy and his Dog" hails from a series published by Thomas McLean in London in 1822 under the title of "Sketches in Lithography, Containing Forty Original Subjects, Designed and Drawn by E. Purcell". For their time these lithographs are possibly unique, in that they portray figures and subjects not seen in British lithography. Topography is supplanted in favour of rustic scenes and fanciful themes.
	The birth of artistic lithography in Britain dates from a 1803 undertaking entitled "Specimens of Polyautography". Major British artists were persuaded by the publisher, Phillip Andre, to create original drawings upon the lithographic stone. The complete set of twelve original lithographs included important contributions by such artists as Benjamin West, James Barry, Thomas Stothard and Henry Fuseli. Yet the set was an economic failure and lithography almost ceased in England until about 1820 when such fine watercolourists as Samuel Prout, William Westall and J. D. Harding saw in this new art a viable method to publish and distribute their topographical views of both Europe and Britain. Apart from topographical art, however, British artists of the first rank continued to neglect lithography until the later 1820's, when exposure to such great French lithographers as Gericault and Delacroix elevated the medium to fine art.

Condition:	Printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper as published for Sketches in Lithography in 1822. Signed by the artist in the stone along the lower right margin. Very faint foxing or staining is apparent in the outer margins else a finely printed impression and in good condition throughout. "A Boy and his Dog" represents a prime, original example of the art of Edward Purcell and of early British lithography.
