Larry Poons

Larry Poons - A Lot Worse Than That

A Lot Worse Than That

Larry Poons’s original silkscreen, "A Lot Worse Than That", is indicative of the important shift in his paintings and prints that took place in the 1970’s and into the early 1980’s. Abandoning any association with Op Art, Lawrence Poons began creating large, uniquely abstract silkscreens and paintings. Of his art from this period Robert Morgan writes, "They simply did not follow the logic of color field painting or any other formalist concepts that were extant at the time. They were aesthetically weird drippy, splashy paintings." *

This original silkscreen (serigraph) is printed upon fine, hand-made laid paper and with full, deckled margins as published by Larry B. Wright in 1980. It is signed and numbered in pencil by Larry Poons along the lower margin. "A Lot Worse Than That" is an important, original example of the influential abstract art by the American artist, Larry Poons.

Note: Lawrence Poons 'Larry Poons': A major American abstract artist, Larry Poons, also known as (Lawrence Poons), first studied music at the New England Conservatory of Music (1955-1957). He then studied art techniques at the Boston Museum School (1958). Larry Poons’s first one man show took place at the Green Gallery in New York City in 1963. Two years later he gained national recognition when his art was included in the influential exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, entitled, "The Responsive Eye". This exhibition brought the Op Art phenomenon to the forefront, and although Larry Poons never considered himself an optical artist his dot paintings and prints from this decade proved to be of much influence.
With his large 1972 painting, "Railroad Horse", Larry Poons shifted his art from highly calculated dots and ellipses to pure abstractions portraying the interplay of color and light. Robert Morgan writes, “Shying away from formulas, Poons believes that the fundamental attribute of a painting is color, and color is what creates the sensation of sensory awareness of light.” ** These words clearly apply to "A Lot Worse Than That".
Today the art of Larry Poons is included in such major collections as the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, Tate Gallery, London, Yale University Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Cleveland Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. Larry Poons is the author of "The Structure of Color" (1971). He has taught art techniques at the NY Studio School and is currently on the faculty of the Art Students League, New York.
