Giovanni Battista Piranesi

Giovanni Battista Piranesi - Veduta Interna della villa di Mecenate

Veduta Interna della villa di Mecenate ('Internal View of the Villa of Maecenas')

Giovanni Battista Piranesi's original etching, "Veduta Interna della villa di Mecenate" depicts an interior view of the Villa of Maecenas in Tivoli, which is also called the Sanctuary of Hercules Victorius. Maecenas was one of ancient Rome's most famous patrons of the arts. This large and imposing edifice was constructed in the second half of the first century, B. C.

Giovanni Battista Piranesi etched this view of the ruins of the Villa of Maecenas in 1764 as one of his plates for his famous "Vedute di Roma". This particular impression was printed and published by Piranesi's heirs in Paris between 1800 and 1807.

Title: Veduta Interna della villa di Mecenate ('Internal View of the Villa of Maecenas')
Artist: Piranesi, Giovanni Battista (Venice, 1720 - Rome, 1778)
Date: 1764 (Paris Edition: 1800-1807)
Medium: Original Etching
Note: Giovanni Battista Piranesi: In the field of the art of architecture one man stands well above the others. Beginning with his first Vedute di Roma etching in 1748, Giovanni Battista Piranesi fashioned an illustrious career which forever changed our manner of viewing man among his constructed creations.
Giovanni Battista Piranesi first went to Rome in 1740 to study etching techniques under Giovanni Vasi. Apart from a two year period, 1743-1745, (when he returned to his native Venice to study under Tiepolo) he remained in Rome for the rest of his life. By 1775 both his son, Francesco Piranesi (1756-1810), and his daughter, Laura Piranesi (b. 1750), assisted their father in his publishing ventures. After Piranesi's death they continued to print impressions in Rome. Around 1800 they moved to Paris and continued to publish impressions from the "Vedute" and other sets. This original impression of "Veduta Interna della villa di Mecenate" ('Internal View of the Villa of Maecenas') was printed at this time.
Piranesi's two most influential sets of etchings are his "Carceri" (Prisons) and the "Vedute di Roma" (Views of Rome). The "Vedute" consists of one hundred and thirty-five large, folio sized plates etched by G. B. Piranesi over a thirty year span (1748-1778). For Giovanni Battista Piranesi, these etchings represented the pinnacle of his art, and over two hundred years of scholarship has concurred, particularly with his mature work which delineates the ruins of Roman architecture. Such is clearly the case with "Veduta Interna della villa di Mecenate".
"Veduta Interna della villa di Mecenate" displays all those influential elements which mark a Piranesi etching of the first rank. Here we see Piranesi's sweeping contrasts of form and tone and, of course, the strangely alienated figures forever dwarfed by the colossal structures. The artistry of Piranesi's ruins is found in its prevailing sense of mystery combined with the ghostly sentiment of a living presence.
