Bartolomeo Pinelli - Costume Study

Costume Study

Bartolomeo Pinelli, an original watercolor: This costume study is drawn upon early nineteenth century tan wove paper and with full margins. The previous owner has written in pencil, "watercolour, Pinelli" on the verso. The composition depicts a rustic family scene consisting of two seated women, their standing husbands and a baby in a wicker walker. "Costume Study" is a prime, original example of the early nineteenth century art attributed to Italian artist, Bartolomeo Pinelli.

Title: Costume Study
Artist: Pinelli, Bartolomeo 'Bartolommeo' (Rome, 1781 - 1835)
Date: c. 1810 - 1820
Medium: Original Watercolor
Note: Bartolomeo Pinelli: One of Italy's most popular early nineteenth century artists, Bartolomeo (or, Bartolommeo) Pinelli was most famous for his scenes of everyday life and costume studies. He created both the preparatory drawings and published etchings for such volumes as Raccolta di Cinquanta Costumi Pittoreschi (1809), Nuova Raccolta di Cinquanta Costumi Pittoreschi (1822), Istorica Greca and Istorica Romana, as well as illustrating the classic works of Dante, Virgil, Tasso, Aretino and Cervantes. Bartolomeo Pinelli thus created many drawings and watercolors, some of which are unsigned. Such is the case with Costume Study. Yet, both stylistically and thematically, this original watercolor drawing matches the oeuvre of Bartolomeo Pinelli. Pinelli's technique (particularly with his earlier works) was to work entirely from life, faintly sketching parts of the composition in graphite and then finishing it with watercolor and washes. These elements are all visible in this charming watercolor which depicts a rustic family scene consisting of two seated women, their standing husbands and a baby in a wicker walker.
Bartolomeo Pinelli studied art techniques at the Accademia di San Luca, Rome, and at the Accademia di Belle Arti, Bologna. He was supported during his student years by the nephew of Pope Benedict XIV. He quickly established himself as a leader among the group known as the 'vedutisti' -- artists who eschewed the current styles of history painting and classicism and painted and drew contemporary Roman scenes for tourists and Italophiles. Obviously, Pinelli's art and that of other vedutisti now represents a most valuable record of Italian life in the early nineteenth century.
