Giovanni Pera

Giovanni Pera - Veduta dell Incisa or View of Incisa Picturesque Views of Tuscany

Veduta dell Incisa (View of Incisa, Picturesque Views of Tuscany)

Giovanni Pera's original aquatint engraving, "Veduta dell Incisa" (View of Incisa) is printed upon hand-made, laid paper and with large, full margins as published in Florence between 1801 and 1803 for F. Fontani’s, "Viaggio Pittorico della Toscana, Florence" (Picturesque Views of Tuscany). "Veduta dell Incisa" is a fine, original example of the landscape and aquatint art created by the Italian artist, Giovanni Pera. Incisa is located in Tuscany's Val d'Arno, approximately twenty kilometers south-east of Florence. This early aquatint engraving depicts the city from the opposite side of the Arno River.

Title: Veduta dell Incisa (View of Incisa)
Engraver: Pera, Giuseppe (Italy, Active c. 1790 - 1810)
Designer: Terreni, Antonio (Italy, eighteenth century artist)
Date: 1801 - 1803
Medium: Original Aquatint Engraving
Note: A tonal method of etching and engraving, the first aquatints were created by Jean Baptiste Le Prince (1733-1781). Grounds, such as resin, were applied to the plate to create tone and texture. In its initial years, artists most often employed the medium to represent topographical views, landscapes and marine scenes. Such works as Giovanni Pera's, "Veduta dell Incisa" (View of Incisa), created between 1801 and 1803, represent both an early and accomplished example of early aquatint engraving.
Published in parts between 1801 and 1803, F. Fontani’s, Viaggio Pittorico della Toscana, contained two hundred and nine large aquatint engravings delineating scenes in Tuscany. As one can see from this original landscape engraving, "Veduta dell Incisa" (View of Incisa), these aquatints are clearly important as both historical and artistic examples.
Each aquatint for this set was designed by Antonio Terreni and engraved by Giovanni Pera. For such fine works of art it is surprising that relatively little is known about either artist. Both a painter and engraver, Antonio Terreni lived and worked mostly in Livourne during the latter decades of the eighteenth century. Thirty-five of his original drawings for "Viaggio Pittorico della Toscana" are housed in the collection of the Museum of Florence. Giovanni Pera is known almost solely for his engraved views of Tuscany.
