Philippe Louis Parizeau

Philippe Louis Parizeau - Figure Study No 5

Figure Study #5

Philippe Louis Parizeau's original etching, Figure Study #5 was created by the French artist in 1768 for a portfolio of twenty-five plates of costumed figures entitled, Recueil de figures et de groupes a l'eau-forte par Ph. L. Parizeau, published in Paris by Niquet. Each etching is indicative of Philippe Parizeau's ability to gracefully capture the elements of form and design. This particular Parizeau etching is the fifth plate in the set. It depicts three figure studies of women, each wearing a long garment, possibly a stola (a long pleated dress), apparel worn by women in ancient Rome and Greece. The woman in front is standing with her right arm lifted up, and the two others are kneeling. It is printed on thick, laid, eighteenth century paper and with full margins, and is signed, dated and numbered within the plate by the artist. Figure Study #5 is a fine, original example of the eighteenth century art by the French artist, Philippe Louis Parizeau.

Note: Philippe Louis Parizeau: An eighteenth century designer and etcher, P. L. Parizeau studied engraving and etching techniques in Paris, under Johann Georg Wille (1715-1808). He first entered Wille's studio in 1766 and quickly became this master engraver's select pupil. In fact, for much of Philippe Louis Parizeau's career he worked in collaboration with Wille, who held the prestigious title of 'Engraver to the King of France'.
During his career, Philippe Louis Parizeau produced both plates after his own designs and engravings based upon the designs of Rosa, Deshayes, Boucher, Le Prince, Greuze and other notable artists. Those etchings and engravings constructed completely from his own hand (such as this original example) are mostly fine eighteenth century images of figure studies, and mythological and religious depictions.
