Note: Frederick L. Owen: An illustrator and etcher/engraver, Frederick L. Owen devoted his talents almost exclusively to nautical subjects. During the 1930's he became particularly well known for his drypoint engravings of tall masted ships which were published in limited signed editions of one hundred impressions by the Madison Avenue firm of Schwartz Galleries. Today his fine prints are included in many major American collections, including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco which lists an impression of The Cape Horner in its permanent collection.
The Cape Horner is characteristic of Frederick Owen's greatest engraved work. His depiction of both the famous ship and the turbulent seas through which she sails is particularly well conceived. As well, for this particular impression, Frederick L. Owen has inscribed in pencil the first two lines of this well known nautical poem,

"I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by."
