Title: Erganzung der Realitat 2 Wegweiser Nurnberg
Artist: Ortner, Laurids (Linz, Austria, B. 1941)
Date: 1972
Medium: Original Photographic Collage
Publisher: Haus-Rucker-Co, Vienna
Note: Haus-Rucker-Co was founded in Vienna in 1967 by three artists and architects, Laurids Ortner, Gunter Zamp Kelp and Klaus Pinter. Three years later branch studios were opened in both New York and Dusseldorf. In 1971 Manfred Ortner (b. 1943), the younger brother of Laurids, joined the group. Haus-Rucker-Co was dissolved in 1992. During its twenty-five years of existence Haus-Rucker-Co was influential for both its architectural projects and experiments and for its published prints. Erganzung der Realitat 2 Wegweiser Nurnberg is one of its earliest and most famous accomplishments.
Both surreal and visionary, the architectural art of Haus-Rucker-Co investigated the effects of pneumatic constructions upon physical environments. In this amazing work of art a giant finger is held aloft in a mundane urban landscape by means of harnessing the volcanic power of the earth's central core.
Laurids Ortner studied architecture at the University of Vienna from 1959 to 1965. He was one of the three founding members of Haus-Rucker-Co in 1967. Laurids Ortner served as professor at the Hochschule, Linz, from 1976 to 1987. During the latter year he also became a professor at the Kunstakademie, Dusseldorf. Along with his brother, Manfred, he founded the architectural firm of Ortner & Ortner. Laurids Ortner has recently designed such buildings as the Landeszentralbank, Potsdam (1991-97), ARD-Haupstadtstudio, Berlin (1999) and Museum fur Moderne Kunst, Vienna (2000).
