Title: Stirling Bridge
Artist: Osborne, Malcolm (Somerset, 1880 - London, 1963)
Date: c. 1920
Medium: Original Aquatint Engraving
Note: Malcolm Osborne: A highly influential English etcher and aquatint engraver of landscapes, urban views and portraits, Malcolm Osborne studied printmaking techniques under Sir Frank Short, at South Kensington. When Short retired in 1924, Osborne succeeded him as the Head of the etching and engraving school. From this position he taught many fine etchers, including Bouverie Hoyton and Geoffrey Wedgewood. Malcolm Osborne was a full member of the Royal Academy and President of the Royal Engravers. Both the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, include his original prints in their permanent collections.
Malcolm Osborne published his first etching in 1904. He was a very deliberate artist and his complete graphic oeuvre contains only slightly over one hundred etchings, drypoints and aquatints. Most of his fine etchings and engravings were published by H. C. Dickins in editions ranging from fifty to one hundred and fifty impressions.
Osborne created a number of aquatints dealing with English landscapes and architecture up to 1926. Stirling Bridge is created in pure aquatint, without a trace of etched line. Osborne’s masterful use of this complex printmaking medium of shades and tones is here seen at its finest.
