Charles Oliver Murray

Charles Oliver Murray - Rood Screen the Church of St. Nicholas

Rood Screen, the Church of St. Nicholas

Title: Rood Screen, the Church of St. Nicholas
Artist: Murray, Charles Oliver (Roxburghshire, 1842 - South Croydon, 1923)
Date: c. 1910
Medium: Original Etching
Note: Charles Oliver Murray 'Charles O. Murray': A Scottish etcher of landscapes, architectural subjects, portraits and historical views, Charles Oliver Murray studied at the Edinburgh School of Design and at the Royal Scottish Academy Schools. During the latter nineteenth century, Charles Oliver Murray produced many fine etchings and engravings after the designs of such contemporary artists as Alma-Tadema, Charles Whymper and W. G. Stevenson. By 1900, however, he turned to etching his own designs and created some sought after views of both Oxford and Cambridge colleges.
Charles O. Murray was elected to the Royal Engravers in 1881. In total he exhibited over one hundred and fifty etchings with the Royal Engravers. As well, his art was regularly shown at both the Royal Academy and at the Royal Scottish Academy.
This large and fine architectural etching of Rood Screen, the Church of St. Nicholas was created by Charles Oliver Murray around 1910. The church of this subject is probably French in origin. Along the lower margin a previous owner has written, "Rude Screen, Dutmude (?), Destroyed in Bombardment." This beautiful work of early interior architecture therefore was in all likelihood a casualty of the First World War on the Western Front. A second owner has also written along the lower margin, "The Choir Screen, the Church of St. Nicholas".
Size: 17 X 10 1/2 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Printed upon thick, wove paper and with large, full margins as published around 1910. Containing very slight soiling in the outer margins and the previously mentioned writings along the lower margin, else a finely printed impression with full plate tone and in very good condition throughout. Signed by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. Rood Screen, the Church of St. Nicholas represents a prime, original example of the etched art of Charles Oliver Murray.
