Filippo Morghen

Filippo Morghen - Veduta Degli Avanzi del Tempio di Venere

Veduta Degli Avanzi del Tempio di Venere Nel Seno di Baia

Filippo Morghen's original etching, Veduta Degli Avanzi del Tempio di Venere hails from the Views of Ruins in the Environs of Naples, published in 1766 which consisted of forty large plates. It is interesting to note that this original etching is dedicated to none other than England's Lady Holland. The dedication below the engraving reads; "A. S. Ecc. Milady Holland Pari d'Ingiterra". With its beautiful rendition of the Italian countryside and its antique ruins, it is typical of the great work created by the Italian artist, Filippo Morghen.

The British Museum, London, includes an impression of "Veduta Degli Avanzi del Tempio di Venere" in its permanent collection under the descriptin, (Temple of Mercury, the Baths of Nero and Agrippina and Mount Tritoli). It may be viewed online under the registration number, 1886,1124.283.

He was a leading engraver for the recent archaeological discoveries detailed in the Antiquities of Herculaneum, published in Naples in 1757, and the sole engraver and publisher of Views of Ruins in the Environs of Naples, published in 1766.
