The Royal Jubilee Celebrations at St. Paul's Cathedral is William Monk's largest and perhaps most famous original etching. The event portrayed is of course Victoria's sixtieth anniversary on the throne. She appears in the carriage under the Parasol in front of the steps of St. Paul's Cathedral. Yet this is much more than an on the spot study of the occasion: the detailed portrayal of the cathedral and its surrounding buildings makes it a classic work of architectural art.
This particular example of The Royal Jubilee Celebrations is a Remarque Proof Impression. 19th century Victorian era etchers and engravers often pulled a select number of impressions before the plate was printed for the regular edition with the title. The Remarque is a small sketch which appears in the lower margin -- in this case it is of the Arch-Bishop. Because of their early fine printings, Remarque impressions are always the most sought after.
