Mario Micossi - Perugia

Perugia

Mario Micossi's original deep etching and aquatint, "Perugia" is printed upon thick hand-made, laid paper and with full, deckled margins as published in the limited edition of one hundred and twenty five impressions by the "Associated American Artists" around 1965. Title: Perugia
Artist: Micossi, Mario (Artegna, born, 1922)
Date: c. 1965
Medium: Original Deep Etching & Aquatint
Publisher: Associated American Artists, New York
Edition: Limited edition of one hundred and twenty-five impressions, numbered 46/125.
Note: Mario Micossi: An internationally recognized artist and etcher, Mario Micossi first studied art at the Udine Lyceum before completing his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 1946. He then moved to New York City where he worked until 1955. He currently lives in his home town of Artegna, which is approximately one hundred miles north of Venice. Micossi first came to the attention of the art world as an illustrator for such leading periodicals as The New Yorker and Saturday Review. From 1960 on, however, he devoted himself almost exclusively to etching and it is in this field of art that his reputation has been established.
Such major galleries as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Fogg Museum, Harvard University, the Albertina, Venice, the Stockholm National Museum, the Stuttgart Staatsgalerie, the Library of Congress and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, own examples of Micossi's original etchings.
A word should be said on Mario Micossi's very original etching techniques. Favouring deep etching for his architectural art, Micossi creates a three-dimensional effect, almost like sculpting on paper. Combined with aquatinting and the employment of separately coloured plates, the end result (as one can see in Perugia) is an accomplished work of modern architectural art.
Perugia was commissioned by the Associated American Artists of New York. Three of Mario Micossi's etchings were printed by this publisher from 1963 to 1966. The Associated American Artists was a leading publisher of graphic art in the United States. From the mid 1930's, it commissioned etchings and lithographs from leading American artists such as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton and Reginald Marsh, as well as from a number of international artists.
