Ludwig Michalek - Eugen Bormann

Eugen Bormann

Ludwig Michalek's portrait of Eugen Bormann is an original drypoint engraving printed upon thick, laid paper and with wide margins as published in Vienna in 1912. Eugen Bormann (1842 - 1917) was a long standing professor at the University of Vienna. He was also Austria's most influential author and scholar in the fields of ancient history and Latin. Eugen Bormann received the Golden Salvator medal in 1912, the same year this drypoint engraving was created. This is a fine, original example of the portrait art created by the Austrian artist, Ludwig Michalek.

Title: Eugen Bormann
Artist: Michalek, Ludwig (Temesvar, 1859 - Vienna, 1942)
Date: 1912
Medium: Original Drypoint Engraving
Note: Ludwig Michalek: An important Austrian painter, engraver and etcher of the early twentieth century, Ludwig Michalek studied art under Joseph Roller, L. Jacoby and Eisenmenger at the Vienna Academy. Throughout his career, Ludwig Michalek was equally gifted at both landscape depictions and portrait studies. In this latter category many of Austria's greatest figures of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, such as Johannes Brahms, sat for his etched portrayals. Today Michalek's original etchings and engraving are included in such major collections as the Museum of Vienna and the Albertina.
Eugen Bormann (1842 - 1917) was a long standing professor of Ancient History and Epigraphy at the University of Vienna. He was also Austria's most influential author and scholar in the fields of ancient history and Latin. He authored such books as "De Syriae Provinciae Romanae Partibus Capita Nonnulla(1865), "Inscriptiones antiquae sassinates" (1874), "De Mensuris Tauromenitanis" (1877), "Miscellanea Capitolina: Instituto Archaeologico centum semestria feliciter peracta gratulantur juvenes Capitolini qui per cenesimum instituti semestre in monte tarpejo constiterunt " (1879) and other important books in the field of ancient history and Latin. The words printed below the portrait read; "Eugen Borman. Zum Siebzigsten Geburstag. Von Freunden, Schulern und Verehrern Dargebracht. 6 oktober 1912." A loose translation is "Eugen Borman. On his Seventieth Birthday. Offered by his friends admirers and alumni. October, 6 1912." Depicted under the portrait, there are various ancient ruins symbolizing Bormann's interest and research in this subject. Eugen Bormann received the Golden Salvator medal in 1912, the same year this portrait was created and upon his retirement in 1914, he received the Commander's Cross of the Emperor of Franz Joseph Order. Eugen Bormann was the father of the artist, Emma Bormann.
