Richard Colley Wellesley, Marquess Wellesley

Henry Meyer's original stipple engraving, Richard Colley Wellesley, Marquess Wellesley is based upon a design created by the British painter, Andrew Robertson. It is printed upon early 19th century wove paper as published in London in 1827. This full length portrait was commissioned when Richard Wellesley, the elder brother of the Duke of Wellington, was sixty-seven years of age and had served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

The National Portrait Gallery, London, includes an impression of Richard Colley Wellesley, Marquess Wellesley in its permanent collection. It may be viewed on line under its number, NPG D37637.

Title: Richard Colley Wellesley, Marquess Wellesley
Artist: Robertson, Andrew (Aberdeen, 1777 - Hampstead, 1845)
Engraver: Meyer, Henry (London, 1782 - 1847)
Date: 1827
Medium: Original Stipple and Line Engraving
Note: Henry Meyer: A prominent early nineteenth century stipple and mezzotint engraver, Henry Meyer was the nephew of the painter, John Hoppner (1758- 1810). He studied engraving techniques at the Royal Academy Schools under Francesco Bartolozzi. Meyer’s first engravings were published in the early nineteenth century. During the following years he excelled with both portraits and decorative subjects. In the former category he engraved such individuals as Lady Hamilton, Admiral Nelson, Richard Wellesley, King George IV, Lord Byron, Sir John Nicholl, Lord Hawkesbury and Guiseppe Ambrogetti.
Henry Meyer exhibited at the Royal Academy and was also a founding member of the Society of British Artists, exhibiting much of his work with this association from 1824 to 1830. He was appointed the Society's President in 1827.
Many of Henry Meyer’s engravings were also published by him such as the original mezzotint engraving entitled, His Grace the Duke of Richmond, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He also became a noted painter of portrait miniatures. In 1830 Meyer was commissioned to come to New York to both paint and engrave the portraits of distinguished Americans. He remained in the United States for four years, engraving some plates for Longacre’s ‘National Portrait Gallery’ and painting portraits such as that of President Andrew Jackson.
According to the unpublished biography kindly provided by Peter Otton, a descendant of the Meyer family, also referenced by the British Museum (Material under consultation by their Prints and Drawings department library), Bernard Francis Hoppner Meyer (1811-1888) was the son of Henry Meyer. Mr. Otton notes that B. F. Hoppner Meyer is the artist that immigrated to America (not) Henry Meyer. He also states that B. F. Hoppner Meyer painted the portrait of President Jackson. Note: We have checked many major reference sources (four are listed below), and there is no listing for this artist or his works of art. This only means we have not found any evidence to substantiate Mr. Otton's information concerning Bernard Francis Hoppner Meyer thus far. However, we were able to find one source online, 'The National Portrait Gallery'. It contains several works of art (c. 1830 to 1840), listed as created by the artist, Bernard Francis Hoppner Meyer (1811-1888), in its permanent collection. They are as follows, Luther Martin, Ref# NPG.77.303, Fitz-Greene Halleck, Ref# 1907.3.DUP4 , Lachlan McIntosh, Ref# UNL00925, Robert Frazer, Ref# MD40012, and Persifor Frazer, Ref# MF090008.
Andrew Robertson: One of the most famous painters of portrait miniatures in the early nineteenth century, Andrew Robertson entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1801. Four years later he was appointed miniature painter to the Duke of Sussex. Andrew Robertson exhibited at the Royal Academy and elsewhere from 1802 to 1842. Today his art may be viewed in such major collections as the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Collection of Her Majesty The Queen.
A Biographical Note: Richard Colley Wellesley (1760-1842) was the elder brother of the Duke of Wellington (Sir Arthur Wellesley) and one of Britain’s most influential statesmen. Wellesley was educated at Eton College and at Christ Church, Oxford. Upon his father’s death in 1781 he assumed the title of 2nd Earl of Mornington and took his seat in the Irish House of Lords. Three years later Wellesley was elected to the House of Commons and shortly thereafter was appointed a lord of the Treasury by William Pitt.
In 1793 Richard Wellesley accepted the office of Governor-General of India. Under his direction English forces eventually drove the French from India and established the country as the Empire’s most important colony. Wellesley also founded the East India Company.
Richard Wellesley was created a Peer of Great Britain in 1797 and Marquess Wellesley in the Peerage of Ireland in 1799. In this capacity he fought many years for Catholic emancipation in Ireland. In 1810, Wellesley became a Knight of the Garter and was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1821.
