Artist: McClellan, John (New York, 1908 - 1986)
Date: 1957
Medium: Original Lithograph
Edition: Limited edition of twenty five impressions.
Note: John McClellan: One of America's greatest lithographic artists of the twentieth century, John McClellan studied at the Art Students League of New York and concentrated upon the lithography classes of Charles W. Locke. McClellan's first published lithographs date from 1927. Most of his early lithographs are figure studies of city types and depictions of nudes and often contain social comment. Even in these earlier works of art, however, non-realist and more psychological elements emerge. This is particularly true in his brilliant examinations of large groupings of people, such as Dissension at the Club (1937) and Children's World (1940).
McClellan contained to make highly provocative lithographs throughout the 1940's and 1950's. His art was regularly included in major exhibitions throughout the United States. By 1955, however, McClellan had begun to examine the human form and condition in a most personal and unique manner. Often basing his compositions upon geometric forms, McClellan created large lithographic art that is both unforgettable and haunting. Playground belongs to this part of his career.
At this time as well, McClellan had moved to the artist's community of Woodstock, New York. Many of his lithographs were printed and published by the Associated American Artists in editions ranging from 100 to 200 impressions. Playground, however, appears to have been printed by the artist himself as he has written, "John McClellan, Woodstock, N. Y., 1. 1. 58" on the verso. Limited to a small edition of twenty-five impressions, it is surely one of McClellan's greatest works of art.
