Arthur Jules Mayeur

Arthur Jules Mayeur - Adagio

Adagio

Arthur Jules Mayeur's original etching, "Adagio" is a Remarque Proof impression printed upon late nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published in Paris in 1895. This impression is signed by Mayeur in pencil and bears the remarque etching in the lower left corner. "Adagio" depicts three men who have just finished their supper at a country tavern. An itinerant musician plays in the shadow before them. It is a fine, original example of the famous etched art created by the French artist, Arthur Mayeur.

Title: Adagio
Artist: Mayeur, Arthur Jules (Bouvigny (Pas-de-Calais), 1871 - Paris, 1919)
Date: 1895
Medium: Original Etching
Note: Arthur Jules Mayeur 'Arthur Mayeur': A talented French artist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Arthur Mayeur studied under both Jacquet and Bonnat at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He obtained a Paris award for his art in 1896 and was the recipient of the Prix de Rome in 1902. In 1909 Mayeur was honoured by the French government when he received the Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur. Mayeur was best known for his original etchings, drypoints and watercolours. He was equally skilled in the genres of landscape and figure studies.
Adagio dates from quite early in Arthur Mayeur's career but it already shows the artist at the height of his suggestive and creative abilities. Three men have just finished their supper at a country tavern. An itinerant musician plays in the shadow before them. We can tell by their gestures and expressions that he has woven a masterful and somewhat melancholy spell with his violin. Even the dog curled around the legs of the chair seems held by the musical notes. This is a most powerful work of etched art where Arthur Jules Mayeur has managed to transform our emotions as surely as the violinist has gripped the mood of his listeners.
In nineteenth century terminology, this particular impression of Adagio is known as a 'remarque proof'. Quite simply, for the initial handful of impressions the artist would create a separate but related vignette etching along the lower margin -- in this case a country gentleman in his distinctive hat. Note that the same hat appears in the large etching hanging above the gentleman's head! At this time, only the remarque proof etchings would be actually hand signed by the artist. Remarque proof etchings are thus considered to be quite scarce and much more valuable than prints pulled from the regular edition.
