Frank Martin was for many years the Professor of Engraving and Etching at London's Camberwell School of Art.
Frank Martin's first original prints were published in the early 1950's. By the end of his career he had produced nearly 600 engravings and etchings, most upon his favourite subject -- women. In relation to women, Martin produced art in an amazing variety of techniques and forms. One of his greatest interests proved to be the Art Deco style of the 1920's and 1930's, and in this light he created a number of stunning portrayals of Hollywood celebrities of the time such as Jean Harlow and Norma Talmadge. Present day collectors of Frank Martin's etchings and woodcuts include Elton John and Michael Caine.
During his career Frank Martin was also commissioned to illustrate a number of books with his etchings and woodcuts. These include, The Bedside Book of the Art of Living (1959), Hollywood Continental and Newhaven-Dieppe: Recollections and some History of the Town of Dieppe (1996). He also co-illustrated the Folio Society's, The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night, with Eric Fraser in 1980.
Frank Martin was elected an Honorary Academician of the Royal Academy and was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. He was also a full member of the Academia delle Arti del Disegro, Florence, Italy. Within the last decade one-man shows of his graphic art have been held in London at the Folio Society, the London Arts Gallery and at the National Film Theatre.
