John Lewis Marks - The March of Interlect or a Dust Man and Family of the 19th Century

The March of Interlect, or a Dust-Man & Family of the 19th Century

J. Lewis Marks's original etching, "The March of Interlect, or a Dust-Man & Family of the 19th Century", gives us an early nineteenth century impression of an aspiring working class family complete with their cottage, pig and dung-hill in the background. Out for their promenade the wife asks, "Dear Robbert, Havent you seed the last number of the Bell's Ass emblee. Do you think it will rain this here arternoon?" The husband replies, "Vy my dear Sal-leaner, ex for the Bells Ass-emblee, it is-ent the Fashion for Gentleman to trouble their heads in, and ex for the rain if ve had a shower it would lay the Dust." At this point the daughter reminds him by stating, "La Papa you said as how I should never mention Dust when we are going to the Park or Threatre". "The March of Interlect, or a Dust-Man & Family of the 19th Century" is a prime, original example of the art created by the British satirical artist, J. Lewis Marks.

Title: The March of Interlect, or a Dust-Man & Family of the 19th Century
Artist: Marks, John Lewis 'J. Lewis Marks' (London, 1769 ? - Active, 1814 - 1832)
Date: c. 1826
Medium: Original Hand-Coloured Etching
Publisher: J. Lewis Marks, Bishopsgate, London
Note: John Lewis Marks 'J. Lewis Marks': An early nineteenth century satirical etcher and publisher, John Lewis Marks was active in London from 1814 to 1832. His earliest etchings were most often published by Tegg but in 1817 Marks opened his own publishing house in Bishopsgate. During the following years J. Lewis Marks sold and published his etchings from establishments in Fleet Street, Picadilly, Finsbury and Smithfield. He also printed Toy Theatre prints and pamphlets.
In his earliest work, John Lewis Marks's etchings bear similarities to those of Paul Pry (William Heath). J. Lewis Marks gained his greatest notoriety, however, during the agitation surrounding the Reform Bills of 1831 and 1832. At this time the public became disillusioned when William IV appointed Wellington to form a new ministry. It was believed in some circles that Queen Adelaide was behind many of the unpopular moves and Lewis Marks created a number of racist etchings (under the title of The Chronologist) exploiting the Queen's German nationality.
The British Museum, London, includes an impression of "The March of Interlect, or a Dust-Man & Family of the 19th Century" in its permanent collection.
