Joseph Margulies

Joseph Margulies - Chasid

Chasid

Joseph Margulies, Chasid, an original soft ground etching: This is a striking, original example of the famous portrait art created by the fine American artist, Joseph Margulies. This impression was published in 1966 by the Associated American Artists in an edition of two hundred and fifty impressions. It is signed, titled and numbered by Joseph Margulies in pencil along the lower margin.

Title: Chasid
Artist: Margulies, Joseph (Vienna, Austria, 1896 - New York City, 1984)
Date: 1966
Medium: Original Soft Ground Etching
Publisher: Associated American Artists, New York
Edition: Limited edition of two hundred and fifty impressions, numbered 68/250.
Note: Joseph Margulies: A highly awarded American painter, etcher and lithographer, Joseph Margulies came to the United States from Austria at an early age. He studied first under the great master of lithography and etching, Joseph Pennell (1857-1926) at the Art Students' League, New York, from 1922 to 1925. Joseph Margulies then continued his artistic education at the National Academy of Design and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He then completed an apprenticeship with Maynard Waltner in Vienna.
For the following five decades Joseph Margulies excelled in every artistic medium. Whether in etching, lithography or in painting he established himself as perhaps the greatest portrait artist in America and was commissioned to execute the portraits of presidents and other distinguished individuals. American museums that include his original etchings and lithographs in their permanent collections are the Metropolitan Museum, New York, Yale University, the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institute.
Chasid is a remarkable example of Joseph Margulies's art in the demanding medium of the soft ground etching. Like most great portrait art this informal study captures so much more of the soul of the sitter than the formal commissions. Chasid was published by the Associated American Artists of New York in 1966 in a sole, limited edition of 250. Since its creation in the mid 1930's, the A.A.A. has commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and many others. During his career Joseph Margulies contributed at least three original etchings to the A.A.A.
The original presentation sticker from the Associated American Artists is included with this etching.
