Marcus Ward Company - Old King Cole

Old King Cole

Title: Old King Cole
Publisher: Marcus Ward Company, London
Date: C. 1890
Medium: Original Chromolithograph

Note: This original chromolithograph entitled "Old King Cole" was published in London by Marcus Ward Company in a portfolio entitled, Our Favourite Nursery Rhymes. Marcus Ward was a major English publisher of children's art and literature during the second half of the nineteenth century. Among its contributing illustrators were such major artists as Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane. As one can see by this large, original example, the Golden Age of children's art was achieved by this and other English publishers of the era.
Chromolithography -- the art of colour printing from lithographic stones -- originated in Europe in the mid 1830's. These original colour prints revolutionized art publishing, and during the following seventy years many chromolithographs were framed to adorn the walls of nineteenth century homes. The practical advances of cheaper, photomechanical methods, however, sounded the death knell for the chromolithograph in the first years of the twentieth century. Yet no artistic medium, either before that time or since then, has managed to equal the deep and rich oil-based tones of the chromolithograph.
