Thomas Major - Ruins in Ancient Rome

Ruins in Ancient Rome

Thomas Major's etching and engraving, Ruins in Ancient Rome hails from a series of twenty-four double page views entitled, The Ruins of Poestum, otherwise Posidonia, in Magna Graecia. The scene depicts the famous temples of Hera at Poestum (or, Paestum), Italy. This original etching and engraving is printed upon early wove paper and with full margins as published in London by Major himself in 1768. Ruins in Ancient Rome is a fine, original example of the architectural and landscape art created by the British artist, Thomas Major.

Title: Ruins in Ancient Rome
Engraver: Major, Thomas (London, 1720 - Covent Garden, 1799)
Designer: Borra
Date: 1768
Medium: Original Etching & Engraving
Publisher: Thomas Major, London
Note: Thomas Major: An eminent English engraver, Thomas Major resided for sometime in Paris before being rudely imprisoned in 1745 by the French in retaliation for the capture of French soldiers at the Battle of Culloden. While there, he was permitted to study under the great French etcher, Le Bas, and engraved several plates after the works of Claude and Berchem. After his return to England, Major distinguished himself with a number of etchings and engravings in a wide range of fields, including portraits, landscapes and historical and topographical views. For forty years he held the position of 'Seal Engraver to the King' and, in 1770, received the noted distinction of being elected the first Associate Engraver to the Royal Academy. Thomas Major was known for his delicate but very accurate and firm style.
This large and beautiful engraving comes from a series of twenty-four double page views entitled, The Ruins of Poestum, otherwise Posidonia, in Magna Graecia. Each of these images was designed by J. B. Borra and engraved and published by Thomas Major. These views are recognized for not only their large dimensions but for the fine and precise visual information they contain. Because of their size, however, many of these prints have been damaged throughout the years and it is not common to find an example from this set in such good condition.
The scene depicts the famous temples of Hera at Poestum (or, Paestum), Italy. Located about ninety kilometers south of Naples, Poestum was a major colony of ancient Greece. The two major temples were built around 460 B.C. and 550 B.C. Rediscovered in the mid eighteenth century, these temples are among the greatest known examples of ancient Greek architecture. Published in 1768, Thomas Major's engravings of Poestum are thus amongst the earliest views of this important archeological site.
