Date: c. 1937 - 1943
Medium: Original Woodcut
Publisher: Philippe Gonin, Paris
Printer: Philippe Gonin, Paris

Note: Aristide Maillol: One of the greatest sculptors and painters of modern art, Aristide Maillol studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, under both Cabanel and Gerome. An exceptional draughtsman, Maillol's original woodcuts and lithographs are as superb as his drawings, pastels and sculptures.
Most of Aristide Maillol's woodcuts were conceived as art for some of the greatest illustrated books of the twentieth century. His woodcuts adorn such classic works as Virgil's, Eclogae (1926), Daphne and Chloe (1937) and Les Georgiques (1937-1943). This original woodcut belongs to the last named set.
The idea for Les Georgiques was conceived as early as 1915. Maillol cut several blocks for the project at this time but did not continue his efforts until 1937. The last woodcut was completed and delivered to the publisher in 1944, shortly before Maillol's death. The completed edition was then published by Gonin in Paris in 1950 in a limited edition of 750 impressions. Altogether the book included 61 Maillol woodcuts, of which a number were small initial letters.
Apart from this a small number of the woodcuts were also printed 'sur blanc' -- meaning without the accompanying text. They were also signed with Aristide Maillol's estate stamp and printed upon Maillol's personal rag paper with his seated nude watermark. This fine impression of The Wood Gatherers bears both the estate stamp and the watermark. No specific edition was given for these 'sur blanc' impressions but it is known that they exist in small numbers.
