Tokujiro Kojima

Tokujiro Kojima - December

December

Tokujiro Kojima's "December" was created for a large portfolio calendar of the twelve months. This original hand-stenciled dye print is printed upon hand-made Japanese paper and with full, deckled margins as created by Kojima around 1970. This impression of "December" is signed with Tokujiro Kojima's red seal to the lower right and pencil signed along the lower margin. It is a most beautiful example of his printmaking skills and a valuable specimen of Mingei art 'folk art'.

Title: December
Artist: Kojima. Tokujiro (Japan, 1912 - 1996)
Date: c. 1970
Medium: Original Hand-Stenciled Dye Print (Working Proof?)
Note: Tokujiro Kojima: A twentieth century Japanese printmaker and kimono, calendar and textile designer, Tokujiro Kojima is best known for his Mingei art. Briefly, 'Mingei' means folk art. During the twentieth century major Japanese artists such as Keisuke Serizawa and Eishiro Abe dedicated their art to Mingei and produced master works in the areas of hand-stenciled dye prints, calendars, paper making, folk toys, ceramics, lacquerware and fabrics.
Tokujiro Kojima was a full member of the Kokugakai Art Association. Today his fine art is included in many public collections, such as the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
December was created for a large portfolio calendar of the twelve months. It was originally printed in a small edition on fabric. For this impression, Tokujiro Kojima employed color printings of black and gray. For the published edition he printed impressions in black and salmon and added the title, "December", above his red chopmark stamp. This then is most likely an experimental proof impression. In any case it is a most beautiful example of Kojima's printmaking skills and a valuable specimen of Mingei art.
