Tsukioka Kogyo

Tsukioka Kogyo - Arashiyama The God of Mt. Arashi from the series Nogaku Zue Scenes from the Noh Theatre

Arashiyama: The God of Mt. Arashi, from the series Nogaku Zue (Scenes from the Noh Theatre)

Tsukioka Kogyo's original woodcut, Arashiyama: The God of Mt. Arashi, from the series Nogaku Zue (Scenes from the Noh Theatre), is printed upon laid rice paper and with full margins as published by Matsuki Heikichi in 1898. The scene depicts three actors wearing elaborate costumes in a in a play from the Noh Theatre. The woodcuts from the Nogaku Zue 'Nogakuzue' (Scenes from the Noh Theatre), also listed as (Pictures of No Performances), were issued at monthly intervals between (1897 - 1902). The God Komori and the Goddess Katsute from Yoshino accompany the central figure represented here as the Great God and protector, Zaou-gongen of Yoshino (Arashiyama, 'Stormy Mountain', the God of Mt. Arashi). The noh play, Arashi-yama celebrates the story of the gods protecting the cherry blossoms of Mount Arashiyama from the wind. This is a superb example of the woodcut art created by the Japanese artist, Tsukioka Kogyo.

Note: Tsukioka Kogyo: A great later nineteenth century Japanese woodcut artist, Tsukioka Kogyo first studied printmaking techniques under his famous step-father, Yoshitoshi. He later took more instructions from Ogata Gekko. During his career Kogyo created a number of fine woodcuts dealing with both natural history and contemporary events, such as the Russo-Japanese War. His name, however, will always be associated with the great series of woodcuts he designed for Heikichi dealing with the Noh Theatre. These were published in various sets in Tokyo from 1897 to 1926 and provide one of the richest veins of historical and artistic information upon this aristocratic form of drama that is available. The woodcuts from the Nogaku Zue 'Nogakuzue' (Scenes from the Noh Theatre), also listed as (Pictures of No Performances), were issued at monthly intervals between (1897 - 1902) and the Nogaku hyakuban (100 Noh dramas) woodcuts were issued between (1922 - 1926).
The printing of Kogyo's woodcuts deserves special mention. Concentrating upon the elaborate costumes of the theatre, many of these woodcuts display individual printings of silver, gold, blind-stampings and even overlays of mica grounds. Arashiyama: The God of Mt. Arashi, from the series Nogaku Zue (Scenes from the Noh Theatre), for example has additional printings in both gold and silver. It can't be doubted that these splendid woodcuts are veritable tout-de-forces of late nineteenth and early twentieth century woodcut techniques. The British Museum of Art includes an impression of this original woodcut in its permanent collection, Registration number: 1949,0409,0.56.
