Frank Le Brun Kirkpatrick & Francois Zmurko

Frank Le Brun Kirkpatrick and Francois Zmurko - A Study in Blue and White

A Study in Blue and White

Frank Le Brun Kirkpatrick's original etching, "A Study in Blue and White" is based upon a design created by Francois Zmurko. This portrait depicts an elegant woman slightly turned to her left. The soft white fur wrapped around her dominates more than half of the image, creating a brilliant effect. This etching is printed upon fine Japon paper and with full margins as published by George Barrie for the "The Art and Architecture of the World's Colombian Exposition" in the limited edition of two hundred impressions. "A Study in Blue and White" is an fine, original example of the early colour etching by the American artist, Frank Kirkpatrick and the portrait art of Francois Zmurko.

Title: A Study in Blue and White
Engraver: Kirkpatrick, Frank le Brun (Philadelphia, 1852 - 1917)
Designer: Zmurko, Francois (Lemberg, 1859 - Varsovie, 1910)
Date: 1894
Medium: Original Etching with Four Colour Plates
Publisher: George Barrie, Philadelphia
Printer: George Barrie, Philadelphia
Note: Frank L. Kirkpartick: A fine American painter, watercolourist and etcher, Frank L. Kirkpartick was equally adept at both landscape depictions and portraits. Kirkpatrick's strong knowledge of the tonal ranges of colours made him a worthy candidate as one of the first (if not the first) Americans to practice the art of etchings printed in colours. Briefly, a separate plate was etched for the introduction of each colour and thus the artist required great skills to register each plate perfectly. Kirkpatrick began his experiments in this demanding medium at about this time. Apart from the obvious beauty of this work of art, it therefore stands as an important example of the early American colour etching.
During the final years of his life, Kirkpatrick turned almost solely to watercolours. His work was exhibited on a regular basis at the Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, until his death in 1917.
Note: George Barrie: From 1893 to 1895 the Philadelphia printer and publisher, George Barrie, was at work upon a large and lavish series of original etchings and chromolithographs detailing exhibits of the fine art from participating countries at the World's Columbian Exposition. The original prints, such as this fine example, were printed on either China or Japon papers and were limited to an edition of only two hundred impressions. Barrie hired some of the finest etchers of the time (the majority being either French or American) to work on the series.
Today these original etchings and lithographs are collected not only for their important 1890's style but for their superb technical accomplishments. Impressions from these limited editions are as finely printed as one can find.
